Prominent ears are one of the few things people hide from childhood into adulthood, with hairstyles, hats, and never tying their hair up. Otoplasty repositions the cartilage so the ears sit closer to the head and match each other. It is a short operation with a fast recovery, and the change is permanent.
…your ears stand away from your head; one sits differently from the other; the fold at the top of the ear never formed properly; or you have simply never worn your hair back. Adults and children from about six years old, once the ear has reached most of its adult size, are both suitable.
It also treats earlobes: stretched piercings, split lobes and lobes that have thinned with age can be repaired in the same session, often under local anaesthetic alone.
Permanent stitches recreate the natural fold and hold the ear in its new position, with the incision hidden behind the ear.
The cartilage is scored and reshaped rather than cut away, which keeps the ear feeling natural and avoids sharp edges.
Split, stretched or elongated lobes reconstructed, frequently under local anaesthetic as a standalone procedure.
The aim is ears you stop noticing, not ears pinned flat. A well-done otoplasty leaves a natural fold and a small gap, because ears that lie completely flat against the head look operated on.
